  To a maid engaged to Joseph, the angel Gabriel came. “Fear not,” the angel told her, “I come to bring good news, Good news I come to tell you, good news, I say, good news. “For you are highly favored by the God the Lord of all, Who even now is with you. You are on earth most blest, You are most blest, most blessèd, God chose you, you are blest!” But Mary was most troubled to hear the angel’s word. What was the angel saying? It troubled her to hear, To hear the angel’s message, it troubled her to hear. “Fear not, for God is with you, and you shall bear a child. His name shall be called Jesus, God’s offspring from on high.   O what shall I do my Savior to praise, So faithful and true, so plenteous in grace, So strong to deliver, So good to redeem The weakest believer that hangs upon Him! How happy the man whose heart is set free, The people that can be joyful in thee! Their joy is to walk in the light of thy face, And still they are talking of Jesus’ grace.   There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in Heaven; There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgment given. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in His blood. There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. • [Luk 2:1] On A Day When Men Were Counted

  On a day when men were counted, God became the Son of Man, That His Name in every census should be entered was His plan. God, the Lord of all creation, humbly takes a creature’s place; He Whose form no man has witnessed has today a human face. On a night, while silent shepherds watched their flocks upon the plain, Came a message with its summons brought by song of angel train: Lo, in Bethlehem’s little village has arrived the shepherd King, And each shepherd to his Master must his sheep as offering bring. When there shone the star of David in the spangled eastern sky, Kings arrived to pay their homage to the Christ, the Lord most high. Yet not all, for lo, there soundeth through the streets a fearful cry; For a king who will not worship has decreed that Christ must die. Yet it’s Christmas, and we greet Him, coming even now to save; For the Lord of our salvation was not captive to the grave. Out of Egypt came the Savior, man’s Immanuel to be— Christmas shines with Easter glory, glory of eternity.

  Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her Baby In a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. He came down to earth from Heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy. And, through all His wondrous childhood, He would honor and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms He lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as He.   Christians, awake, salute the happy morn Whereon the Savior of the world was born.   Away with our fears! The Godhead appears In Christ reconciled The Father of mercies in Jesus the Child. He comes from above, In manifest love, Desire of our eyes, The meek Lamb of God, in a manger He lies. Immanuel’s birth What triumph on earth! Yet could it afford No better a place for its heavenly Lord? The Ancient of Days Redeems a lost race: His glory comes down Self-humbled to carry us up to a crown.   From every spire on Christmas Eve, the Christmas bells ring clearly out Their message of goodwill and peace, with many a call and silver shout. For faithful hearts, the angels’ song still echoes in the frosty air, And by the altar low they bow, in adoration and in prayer.
